Learn more about the writing lab
Why we hope you’ll come see us:
- You’re interested in improving your writing process.
- Tutors can recommend general strategies for brainstorming, organizing, developing, revising, and proofreading.
- Immediate feedback focused on your questions, your writing projects, and your writing style can help you become a more skilled, confident writer.
- You want to polish your writing style.
- Tutors can help you identify patterns in your writing style and offer suggestions for making your sentences more clear, concise, and powerful.
- Through mini-lessons taken from your own writing, you can learn to identify and revise grammatical errors.
- You want a sounding board for the strength and clarity of your argument.
- You can get input about which ideas are already supported and connected in your paper and which you might consider expanding, clarifying, or omitting.
- Tutors can ask questions to help you uncover additional perspectives or counterarguments.
- Tutors can help you sort out conventions for integrating and citing sources.
How to prepare:
- Consider your goals for the tutoring session.
- Your current writing project is a vehicle that can help you move toward stronger writing skills in the long run. Take advantage of the opportunity to explore “big picture” questions about writing processes, current strengths, opportunities for improvement, and academic conventions.
- Come with questions.
- Let the tutor know which aspects of the paper you want to prioritize as you write and revise.
- You’re in charge, so ask about the areas you most want to improve.
- If possible, bring the instructions and grading rubric for the writing assignment.
- If you’re revising a paper, bring a copy with the instructor’s comments.
- If you know when you want to work with a tutor, consider making an appointment.
- Come to the lab to put your name on the schedule at a time that works well for you. You may have one ½-hour appointment (in addition to drop-in visits) every day. Appointments are available about a week in advance.
- Plan to visit far enough in advance that you have sufficient time to revise after your tutoring session.
When to visit:
- Come in at any point in the writing process.
- Early in the writing process, tutors can help you brainstorm ideas and recommend strategies for organizing and developing ideas into a draft form.
- During the revision stage, coming early means you’ll have sufficient time to revise and the option of returning for additional feedback.
- Visit us anytime between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm on Monday through Friday.
- The lab opens the second week of the term and operates (excluding UO holidays) through the Wednesday of finals week.
- Some times of the day, week, and term are busier than others. If tutors are busy when you come, please feel free to wait, sign up for a future appointment, or drop in at another time.
- Summer hours differ. Please check with TLC (541)346-3226, 68 PLC for details
Where to find us:
