Mark Reed, Mentor
Geological Sciences

Drew Gorman-Lewis, McNair Scholar

Mark Reed received his Ph.D. in 1977 from the University of California, Berkeley. Currently a Professor of Geological Sciences, he has been part of the UO faculty since 1979. His research group focuses on describing ore deposits and modeling geochemical processes in natural waters, especially those that produce ore deposits. Additional studies have focused on understanding the composition and chemical processes in volcanic gases and geothermal systems. Recent publications include “Reconstruction of In Situ Composition of Sedimentary Formation Waters” (with J. Palandri), Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, 65, 2001; “Calculation of Simultaneous Chemical Equilibria in Aqueous-Mineral-Gas Systems and Its Application to Modeling Hydrothermal Processes,” Chapter 5, in J. Richards, and P. Larson, eds., Techniques in Hydrothermal Ore Deposits Geology, Reviews in Economic Geology, vol. 10, 1998; and “Theoretical Chemical Thermometry on Geothermal Waters: Problems and Methods” (with Z. H. Pang), Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, 62, 1998.
