Journey of the Salmon v. the Human Journey
This paper briefly addresses the beginning of a paradigm shift from a European,
Cartesian based world view to a more holistic world view expressed by Native
American cultures. It explores the consequences of the relationship between
the journey of the salmon and the journey of human populations. Using the Relational
Model (Proudfoot, 1989), the research will also explore the possibility of creating
a balance between salmon and human populations by reviewing the history of dam
development in the Pacific Northwest and the mechanisms intended to support
survival of the salmon runs. Specific dams investigated include the Elwah Dam
on the Elwah River and Icicle Creek Dam in Leavenworth, Washington, both of
which are examples of national representations of local, regional, and global
issues that affect everyone and everything on the planet. Finally, this paper
will continue to investigate salmon runs on the Columbia and Elwah rivers.
