Debra Merskin is Associate Professor of Advertising in the School of Journalism
and Communication. She received her Ph.D. from Syracuse University in 1993 and
joined the UO faculty that same year. Since then, she has taught courses related
to women, minorities, and media as well as advertising and society. In 1997,
Professor Merskin received the School of Journalism’s Marshall Award for
innovative teaching. Anchoring her theoretical focus in media dependency theory,
her research interests include the representation of women and minorities in
the media, examining historical studies, and the social influences of the media.
