Associate Professor of Chemistry
University of Oregon
Michael Haley, Associate Professor of Chemisty, received his Ph.D. from Rice
University in 1991 before joining the UO faculty in 1993. His research focuses
on the exploration of non-natural systems and uses current synthetic methodology
for the preparation of novel organic materials and compounds of theoretical
interest. Primarily those interests are focused in the areas of acetylene chemistry
and metalla-aromatic chemistry. An Alexander von Humboldt research fellow in
2000-2001, Professor Haley was a recipient of the Thomas F. Herman Faculty Achievement
Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2002. Recent publications include “Two
Uncommon, Competitive Mechanisms for (2-Ethynylphenyl) triazene Cyclization:
Pseudocoarctate Versus Pericyclic Reactivity” (with D. B. Kimball and
R. Herges), Journal of the American Chemical Society (2002); and “Nonlinear
Optical Properties of Dehydrobenzo[18]annulenes: Expanded Two-Dimensional Dipolar
and Octupolar NLO Chromophores” (with A. Sarkar, J. J. Pak, and G. W.
Rayfield), Journal of Materials Chemistry (2001).
