An Inventory and Assessment of Native American Artifacts from the Coos
County Historical Society Museum, North Bend, Oregon
Almost no formal archaeology has been conducted in many portions of the Southern
Oregon Coast, such as the Coquille Valley. Therefore, one important method available
to gain information about the life-ways of the native people in that region
is to inventory the artifacts housed in the museums of the district. The purpose
of this research is to describe and assess two museum collections donated to
the Coos County Historical Society Museum. The combined collections number several
hundred stone artifacts and tools, with little or no information attached to
most of them. A final report will summarize the quantity, quality, and types
of artifacts in the collections. This project is critical if the cultural history
of the Southern Oregon Coast is not to be lost or worse, misunderstood.
