Carlos Aguirre earned his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1996 and
joined the faculty of the UO Department of History that same year. Since then
he also has been Visiting Professor at the Universities of Puerto Rico (Río
Piedras) and San Marcos (Lima). Professor Aguirre has received research grants
from the American Philosophical Society and the Guggenheim Foundation. In addition
he earned the Ersted Award for distinguished teaching at the UO (2002). Aguirre
has co-edited several books, including Crime and Punishment in Latin America.
Law and Society Since Late Colonial Time (with Ricardo Salvatore and Gilbert
Joseph), Duke University Press, 2001; and Reconstructing Criminality in Latin
America (with Robert Buffington), Scholarly Resources, 2000. He is the author
of Agentes de su propia libertad (1993) and The Prison Experience. The Criminals
of Lima and their Worlds, 1850-1935 (forthcoming, Duke University Press).
