Gautam Bhattacharyya, Organic Lab Instructor, earned his Ph.D. from Purdue University in 2004 and joined the UO the same year. He is particularly interested in chemical education and the philosophy of science. His current research is focused on understanding how students learn organic chemistry, how they evolve into research chemists, and evaluating the more recent shift to make lab experiences more "research-like." Part of the goal is to understand what "habits of mind" students learn during their education and to understand what barriers might inhibit students from applying chemical concepts to their lab activities.
