John Nicols, Professor of History and of Classics, received his
Ph.D. in 1974 from UCLA. He held a position as Assistant Professor
of Classics at Stanford University before joining the UO faculty
in 1980. Currently, Nicols is the Director of the Humanities Program
and the Independent Studies Program. Also, he is Co-director of
the "Mapping History" project, an electronic, interactive, historical
atlas. Recent publications include "Hospitium and Amicitia
in Roman Public Life," Journal of Roman Archaeology (2002);
"The Idea of Rome and the Idea of Europe," in Engaging Europe
Today (Rowan & Littlefield, 2005); "The Crisis of the 3rd Century:
A New Perspective," in Impact of Empire (expected, 2007).
