Daniel Pope
History
Daniel Pope earned his Ph.D from Columbia University in 1973 and
was a Harvard-Newcomen Postdoctoral Fellow. He joined the UO Department
of History in 1975 and has since taught sections of the US History
survey course; more specialized courses in business history, economic
history, consumer culture in the United States, and the history
of American radicalism; and courses in Denmark. Along the way, he
has been the recipient of the CIES/Fulbright Senior Lecturer Award
and the Burlington Northern Distinguished Teacher Award. As a university
scholar, he has published articles and books focused on economic
history, business history, and advertising history. More recently,
he has immersed himself in issues related to nuclear power in the
American West and Pacific Northwest, publishing articles about the
Eugene’s flirtation with nuclear power and the Washington
Public Power Supply System.
Only recently has Professor Pope been a mentor for a McNair student,
but his support for the program and its goals predates the program’s
existence on the UO campus. His close examination of American social
history and his genuine concern for students make him an ideal person
to offer remarks for the eighth McNair Research Symposium.
