Alexander B. Murphy earned his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago
in 1987 and joined the UO faculty the same year. Currently, he is
Professor of Geography at the University of Oregon, where he also
holds the James F. and Shirley K. Rippey Chair in Liberal Arts and
Sciences. He specializes in cultural and political geography, with
a regional emphasis on Europe. Professor Murphy is a past President
of the Association of American Geographers (2003-2004), a Vice-President
of the American Geographical Society, and an editor of both Progress
in Human Geography and Eurasian Geography and Economics. He
is the author of more than seventy articles and several books, including
Human Geography: Culture, Society, and Space, 8th ed. (with
H. de Blij and E. Fouberg), Wiley (2006); “The Geopolitical
Implications of Environmental Change,” Projections
(forthcoming); and “The Changing Face of U.S.–Europe
Relations: Geopolitical Causes and Possible Consequences,”
GeoJournal (2006).
